Over 160 airlines in the US fly to various destinations each day. This means that there are many airports in the US. Some of the small airports, or regional airports, have less flights go in or out of their facility each day. Some of the smaller airports may only use small airline carriers that operate only in their small region. Other large international airports have multiple flights entering and leaving at all hours of the day and night. There is only one of the 50 states in the US that does not have a primary airport, Delaware, a small state.
Millions of people board domestic and international flights each year. Large airports that can accommodate international flights have customs officers who check and interview incoming passengers from foreign countries. All airports have some level of security check in order for passengers to board a flight, and the federal government under the FAA or Federal Aviation Administration regulates these. Other federal agencies who have an active part in airports and their flights are the US Customs & Border Protection officials and those from the US Homeland Security Department. These federal agencies enforce visa and passport regulations, luggage content, and other aspects of travelers who enter America.
Airports with the most passengers who boarded airplanes from airports in major cities in the US last year were the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia; O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California; Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Dallas, Texas; and Denver International Airport in Denver, Colorado. Cargo is also shipped very often in the US. Airports who shipped the most cargo from their airports last year were Memphis International Airport in Memphis, Tennessee; Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska; Louisville International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky; Miami International Airport in Miami, Florida, and the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California.
