American Customs/values/etiquette

America tours

Although the United States is made up of people from all over the world, there are some very specific American customs/values/etiquette that visitors should know. For instance, most Americans call each other by their first names, and it is not a sign of disrespect if they do this. Workers in restaurants and in other public places may call a visitor Sir or Ma’am.

Americans also shake hands when they first meet someone, especially in business situations. They do not hug or kiss anyone unless it is a person in their family or someone who they are very close to. In fact, it is considered very rude to get too close to a person when speaking with them. Getting too close will make an American very uncomfortable. It is also not a good idea to touch a person on the arm or anywhere while talking. Although people can be friendly and helpful, they do not usually speak to those they do not know when out in public, such as in stores, at the bank, or other places.

Americans value their freedom, and although they are free to discuss any subject, they usually do not talk about politics, the government, or religion unless they are with those they know well. Abortion, racism, and homosexuality are other subjects that should be avoided in most conversations. Americans do not discuss money, such as how much they earn at their job or how much their car or house costs. It is considered very rude to ask a person about personal money matters.

Americans generally value hygiene and smelling fresh. They usually bathe each day, wash their hair at least several times a week, and wear deodorant. Women shave their underarms and legs most of the time. It is unacceptable to spit, and if a person has a cold or needs to spit, it should be done in a tissue that is then thrown away. Urinating in public is also not done in America, and toilets, or restrooms, can be found in many public spots. Nose picking is also frowned upon as being very rude. Most Americans wash their hands after using the restroom.
