It would take many weeks to visit all of the historical sites located in the US. Some of these represent early colonists and how they lived, such as Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia or in Jamestown, Virginia. Williamsburg offers displays of workers from the 17th century and other exhibits showing how early American colonists lived. Jamestown, the first successful colony in North America, is where the first representative government met and where the first recorded arrival of Africans to North America occurred.
There are also historical sites that remember the wars that the US has been involved. Fort Sumter in South Carolina is the site where the Civil War began. There are still walls and much of the fort standing for tourists to view. Washington, D.C. has many memorials that honor veterans who fought in foreign wars. The National World War II Memorial honors the numerous soldiers who died to ensure world freedom. The Korean War Memorial consists of 19 stainless steel sculptures that look toward a granite wall with many faces carved into it. The Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial is a moving, simple structure with names of those who died in this war engraved into it. Also located in Washington, D.C. is the historical site where many war heroes from early America up to modern times are buried – Arlington National Cemetery. Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. is the theater where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. There is a museum as well where tourists can learn more about Lincoln.
Some historical sites demonstrate how certain people lived. The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina was once the home of the wealthy Vanderbilt family. The huge estate still has areas that are used by people of today, such as the Biltmore Inn where visitors can stay overnight. There are tours of the estate and of the gorgeous grounds that feature large flower gardens and much landscaping.
