Hartford is the capital, and second most densely populated city in the state of Connecticut. The majority of the city's economy rests in insurance, and it is home to the head offices of some the world's most successful financial and insurance firms. As one of the first settlements in the United States, Hartford contains the nation's first park, Bushnell Park, where there is a selection of sculptures, and the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, which honors those who fought and died in the American Civil War.
Hartford holds the recently opened Connecticut Science Center, which features over 150 different exhibits, where visitors can take part in a range of experiments and workshops. The city is also home to a wealth of cultural institutions such as the Meadows Music Theater, the Hartford stage, and Wadsworth Atheneum, the longest established museum of art in the country, which boasts a large collection of post-impressionist works.
