Mesquite has a population of around 140,000 people. It is known as the "Rodeo Capital of Texas," and as a result of the rodeo's popularity in the city, events are held on a very regular basis, and draw crowds from across the state.
Mesquite is home to one of the world's largest movie theaters. It features thirty screens and seats a little over six thousand people. Throughout the year, the Mesquite Arts Council holds a wide variety of exhibitions that are open to residents and visitors.
Mesquite has over a dozen different public parks, which provide walking and biking trails, playgrounds and soccer fields. Every April, Mesquite hosts the Real Texas Festival. The festival is a celebration of country music, "Made in Texas" goods and delicious food. People who attend this festival are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, quilts or camping chairs to ensure that they are comfortable while they enjoy watching great country musicians perform.
