The “Treasure State” as Montana is called, has over seventy seven named ranges in the Rocky Mountains. The name of this state is derived from the term “Montaña” which means “Mountain”.
The capital of Montana is Helena and the largest city in this state is Billings. People here live on ranches and the economy is based on farming, wheat production, oil, coal, lumber and tourism.
Three of the five entrances to Yellow Stone Park are in Montana. Additionally, the Glacier National Park is in this state. In was also in Montana that the Battle of the little Bighorn took place between Native Americans and the US Cavalry. The victorious Lakota and Northern Cheyenne tribes successfully defeated the US forces. Unfortunately, Sitting Bull, the leader of the Lakota Native American tribe was later killed by US “reservation police”.
The Continental Divide runs diagonally through the state. This is the mountainous divide that separates rivers that drain into the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea or Arctic Ocean.
The numerous mountains and valleys provide a variety of entertainment for visitors to Montana. The most popular of these are Flathead Valley, Big Hole Valley, Bitterroot Valley and Gallatin Valley.
With such a diverse geography, there is always something to do in Montana. Visitors can enjoy this state’s attractions throughout the year although the winter may make traveling to some of the attractions difficult.

In addition to the glacially carved mountain ranges, visitor can experience huge Waterfalls, fifty glaciers, seventy species of mammals, two hundred and sixty species of birds and seven hundred miles of hiking trails.
