On the banks of the James River in the south of Virginia, Newport News is a strong military city, and home to nearly 180,000 residents, many of whom are employed in defense related industries. A historic city with a number of museums and history exhibits, Newport News is a popular destination for families in the southwest Virginia region.
One of the city's most popular family attractions is the Virginia War Museum, with exhibits dedicated to US military history and a wide and valuable collection of artifacts and memorabilia. The US Army Transport Museum is also based in Newport News, with in excess of 100 military vehicles on-site marking the history of transport in the US armed forces.
In addition to its museums and galleries, Newport News is also home to over 30 public parks, funded by the city. Popular for walking, fishing, cycling and as recreational spaces, the parks are also home to a number of community events throughout the year, including an annual golf championship at Newport News Park.
