Portland, Ore. is referred to as the greenest city in the United States. It has an estimated population of 575,930 and a total area of 145.4 sq mi of land. Historically, the name was decided with a coin toss between the two owners, Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine and Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts. Pettygrove won and name it Portland, Ore. The coin used is known as the Portland Penny and is now on display in the Oregon Historical Society.
Portland, Ore. is a haven for most tourists who are into relaxing atmospheres. It has numerous parks and gardens like the International Rose Test Garden, Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Forest Park Mill Ends Park, Washington Park, Oregon Zoo, Portland Japanese Garden, Council Crest Park and Mount Tabor Park. It also has several performing arts institutions which include the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Oregon Symphony, Portland Center Stage and Portland Opera.
Portland, Ore. is well known for its quality microbrewery beer since 1980’s. Up to present Portland have 28 breweries within the city alone. Notable brewers include McMenamin brothers, Widmer brothers, Bridge Port and Hair of the Dog. It is also a major manufacturer of computer components with Intel as the largest employer in the area.
