In the past, San Jose was but a supply base for gold prospectors during the gold rush, it slowly grew commercially. After railroads were introduced to the city, the focus of the city shifted from supplying gold prospectors to supplying and distributing agricultural products throughout the United States of America. Even until today, food processing, agriculture and distribution of the said products play a major role in the city’s economy.
Though San Jose was the first city to be established in California, it was overtaken in terms of size by Los Angeles and San Diego, but that never discouraged San Jose from competing. Many high technology companies are located in San Jose and due to that; the city has even been dubbed as Silicon Valley. Computer parts are not the only high technology things that San Jose is venturing into. The city also has almost sci-fi level of medical technology. Gene splicing and heart transplants were developed in San Jose.
Tourism is also important for San Jose and tourists enjoy the great benefits of San Jose’s excellent public transportation system. Reason for tourists to go to San Jose is its many attractions like museums, parks and other cultural collections.
